Empathy is about understanding our own and other people’s feelings and points of view (perspectives).
When you have empathy, you try to feel what someone else is feeling in order to show that you care about them. You try to see things from other people’s points of view. Sometimes you are able to put yourself in another person’s shoes or see something from that person’s point of view (this is called perspective taking) even without that person asking you to do that.
When you are using empathy, you recognize what other people are thinking and how they are feeling, and then—because you know what they’re thinking and feeling—you treat other people with respect and kindness.
Let’s hear from you!
